DISABILITIY PRIDE MONTH
DISABILITIY PRIDE MONTH

Disability Pride Month is celebrated annually throughout July and commemorates the anniversary of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law on July 26, 1990. The official 2026 theme is "The World Works Better With Us".

  • Origin: The very first Disability Pride Day took place in Boston in 1990, the same year the ADA was passed. It evolved into a month-long celebration in July 2015 to mark the ADA's 25th anniversary.
  • Impact: The observance aims to destigmatize disabilities, showcase disabled individuals' contributions, and raise awareness around critical topics like employment, housing, and systemic discrimination.
The Disability Pride Flag
The widely recognized flag features a dark charcoal background with a diagonal band of five colors—each representing a distinct category of disability:
  • Red: Physical disabilities
  • Yellow: Intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • White: Non-visible and undiagnosed disabilities
  • Blue: Psychological disabilities and mental health conditions
  • Green: Sensory disabilities (including visual impairments)
