The History of The Rainbow Flag

The History of The Rainbow Flag
The History of The Rainbow Flag

Up until 1978 the pink triangle had been the symbol for the gay movement.  But it represented a dark past.  Adolph Hitler had created the pink triangle during World War II as a stigma on homosexuals.  It was a tool of Nazi oppression.

Artie Bressan Jr., a filmmaker, and Cleve Jones, a writer, pressed their friend and artist Gilbert Baker to design a new, empowering symbol for the movement.  Bressan and Jones had suggested this to Baker several times but Baker brushed them off.  That is until 1976 when he observed how important and symbolic the American flag was for the Bicentennial celebrations.  The flag was everywhere, printed on thousands of different items.  That was when he started to think seriously about designing the flag for the gay community.

Later, at the Winterland Ballroom, Baker observed how all the dancers were like a swirl of color and light.  That’s when the idea of the rainbow came to him.  A rainbow flag seemed like the natural choice.  The rainbow came from the earliest history as a symbol of hope.  It is found in the Bible and in the history of the Chinese, Egyptians, and Native Americans.

Baker’s creation, the rainbow pride flag, was first flown at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade in June 1978.   The flag originally had eight stripes but over the two years following its’ creation, the design was changed to its’ current, 6-stripe version.  It still assigns a meaning to each color: red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for harmony and purple for spirit.   Baker did not copyright the design because he wanted it to belong to everyone.

The flag has become a symbol of the LGBTQ+ movement, not only in the U.S., but around the world.

TREAT MALES WHO WANT TO BUY GUNS LIKE WE TREAT WOMEN WHO WANT TO HAVE ABORTIONS

Gloria Steinem has an excellent suggestion.

If women are equal to men as the rabid rethuglicans say we are, then there certainly should be no difference in how we are treated vs. how men are treated.  That's the fair & equal thing to do.  RIGHT?

MARCH FOR OUR LIVES - JUNE 11
MARCH FOR OUR LIVES - JUNE 11

Yes! March For Our Lives is marching once again on June 11, 2022. After countless mass shootings and instances of gun violence in our communities, it’s time to take back to the streets and march for our lives. We marched in 2018 after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Florida, and now we’re headed back to DC. Join us on June 11th in Washington, D.C., or in one of our hundreds of local marches on the same day, across the nation.

We have hundreds of locations nationwide organizing marches, showcasing the breadth of our grassroots movement. We encourage you to go to https://marchforourlives.com/March22/ for a map where you can locate a March in your area, and to search on Facebook for an event near you. Facebook is likely the best way to reach out to a local organizer if you have questions about a local event.

A PROCHOICE MAN SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO MEN

A PROCHOICE MAN SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO MEN
A PROCHOICE MAN SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO MEN

A  PROCHOICE  MAN  SPEAKS  DIRECTLY  TO  MEN

As a dedicated male feminist, I have fought for abortion rights since 1984.

Yet in all these years, I have never spoken directly to men about why every prochoice man needs to join this fight.

The time has come.

In a few weeks, the MAGA Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade, the historic 1973 ruling that made abortion accessible and legal throughout the United States.

The results will be immediate and devastating, especially for women of color, poor, young, or LGBTQ+ people.

Just look at Texas, where MAGA Republicans banned abortions after 6 weeks - just 2 weeks after a missed period. Abortions in Texas dropped by half as women were forced to travel long distances to neighboring states. After Roe, many neighboring states will slam their doors shut.

What about shipments of safe abortion pills after 6 weeks? You guessed it - Texas banned those too.

Extreme, anti-choice Republicans in state legislatures have been ramming through laws regulating and prohibiting abortion for the last 30+ years, often in the dead of night.

For example, Louisiana Republicans in 2006 outlawed nearly all abortions, including for rape and incest. The law punishes anyone who performs or aids in an abortion with up to 10 years in prison - specifically forced labor camps - and a maximum fine of $100,000.

So when Roe is overturned, abortion will be outlawed or severely restricted in as many as 28 states, leaving the most personal, private decisions of 58% of the country controlled by MAGA Republicans.

For a brief time, abortion will remain legal in deep-blue Democratic states like New York, Illinois, and California.

But if MAGA Republicans win Congress in November - which polls say is possible - they will immediately pass a law to outlaw abortion in all 50 states - even Democratic-controlled states.

And this MAGA Supreme Court will do nothing to stop them.

So prochoice men: it’s time for all of us to join the solution.

Women have been fighting for reproductive freedom and abortion care since the 1960s. Women have marched, lobbied, donated, campaigned for prochoice candidates, and run for office themselves - even for President.

But MAGA Republicans cannot be defeated by prochoice, politically active women alone.

Moreover, abortion access has never been just a “women’s issue.” It affects every man who has ever experienced an unintended pregnancy with a partner - or tragically discovered a medical circumstance that made abortion necessary.

Abortion is an issue of personal freedom vs. governmental control over private decisions which impact everyone in a community and a family - including men.

We are fighting for a future where abortion is available in all of our communities, and all people can create the families they want without barriers, stigma or shame.

It’s time to call in every male ally to join the fight.

Ask yourself: are you "prochoice"? It's an extraordinarily simple question.

If a person gets pregnant - and believes deeply that she cannot carry that pregnancy to term - who should decide?

The person with her family and medical team, or Republican politicians, or anti-abortion vigilantes, or local law enforcement?

If you answer "the person," you're prochoice - just like me.

So now - in the post-Roe era - ALL pro-choice men must act.

Thanks for all you do.

IT'S TIME TO STAND UP & BE COUNTED

IT'S TIME TO STAND UP & BE COUNTED
IT'S TIME TO STAND UP & BE COUNTED

Bans Off Our Bodies ……….. May 14th

Read & then make your plans to join in the fight!

On May 2nd, we learned from a leaked draft opinion that SCOTUS is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, stripping the constitutional right to abortion in spite of fifty years of precedent.

The Supreme Court is making their official decision on abortion rights in June. Once that happens, 26 states could move quickly to ban abortion, meaning millions of people could live without local access to abortion care.

Roe has always been the floor, not the ceiling. Many Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and other people of color experience barriers to accessing abortions. The people in your community and across the country deserve the power and freedom to make their own personal reproductive health care decisions.

We have to act NOW, all across the country. Together we will send a strong message that we're not backing down. Supporting abortion access must be protected and defended.
